However, if you want to play solo and not have Companions, there are Traits and Skills to support that, per Bethesda’s Todd Howard.

While much has been revealed about Starfield’s mechanics, from the procedurally generated planets and biome diversity to the character depth, there are still plenty of mysteries about the companions. How many are there? How many will be romance options?

In a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, director Todd Howard revealed, “The four main Constellation ones are the ones that support full quest lines for them and romance.” This answer is interesting because it opens the door for other options that may not have as many in-depth quests. Time will tell.

Howard also confirmed that romance or not, if you don’t want Companions, some Traits and Skills support solo play. If your Companions get upset, then your relationship changes. You can also leave or assign them to Outposts and unused ships. If you want a crew of robots, that is “technically” possible.

Starfield is out on September 6th for Xbox Series X/S and PC, and there’s much to look forward to.
