Formula Legends PS5 Review

What’s Formula Legends about?

Formula Legends is a arcade style driving game based off a Formula level type racing circuit not quite Formula 1 seemly targeted at a younger generation with it’s obvious kid-type art style. It’s not an official licensed game so you won’t find authentic drivers names or fully authentic cars or model names but that point doesn’t take away from the game itself. You will see car manufacturers like “Penault” or drivers like “Michael Shoemaker” for example. The game features several racing era type racing modes like 60’s, 70’s etc.., unfortunately, multiplayer or split-screen is not featured. The game has a tutorial section at the start taking you over all the usual track and car features and while it does have a good few typical features, nothing new springs to mind. The game does have a weather system.

What’s the gameplay and controls like?

There are several game modes in Formula Legends and unlocks that come with them in the story mode you can move through several decades of racing, from the seventies to the eighties and 00’s but you can mix and match and play them in any order. The cars aesthetics and maps did change briefly between eras but not enough to really be super noticable.

Formula Legends PS5 Review

The Controls on Formula Legends felt very clunky from the gat go and while you can get better cars and unlocks throughout the game, the controls still felt extremely heavy and felt myself crashing way too much even as much as a bad driver i can be, it felt a little too obvious. You can disable various options in the settings to make the driving a little less daunting but still made it hard to get around corners as tightly as the CPU seems to be able to do flawlessly. It also felt like the smallest of knocks would turn my car violently in the opposite direction forcing me to use return to track button most the time because i would be facing the wrong way a lot.

How does the game look graphically, Sound?

Formula Legends is not a AAA title, and it doesn’t try to be but it’s graphics depending on where you’re looking are either okay or bad, in a cartoonish way. The tracks and cars do vary depending on the era, with dirty sides of tracks in early eras to getting more in code in the later years. The weather system does look fine however it seems to not match well with the other settings in the game, like tire choices, steering, etc.. There’s 14 circuits inspired by historic racing locations from waterfront locations to greenways and more that look great.

The sounds in Formula Legends are not too bad in comparison to some racing titles but at some stages in the game, it seems to lose audio and comes back by itself later in the race, not sure why that happens. There’s various engine sounds that also vary depending on the era and which car it is. Some of the laster sounds are spot on to the sounds of that era too so that’s promising.

How’s the progression and replay ability?

As standard, Formula Legends has 14 tracks and 5+ modes to play through. You can unlock various items like new cars, parts and more. You can create your own custom races and championships, compete in time trials and more.

You can also mod various items like your helmets or liveries within he game. The steering however was so bad i found it hard to progress too far into the game to see just how much there was to replay. However there was word about DLC and that new tracks would be added further down the line.

Conclusion

Formula Legends could have been a whole lot more and if the steering was fixed it would become more fun to play, however the game at its current state is just a chore to try and have fun with, which a game should be. The lack of multiplayer is disappointing and hope they do something about that in the future. The oversteer seriously needs to be adjusted that doesn’t make it so hard to stay on track. I would like to come back to Formula Legends in the future and see that its been adjusted and check it out again but at the moment it’s steering and no multiplayer doesn’t give it much replayability.
