Battlefield 2042 is Adding a Time-Limited Dead Space-Themed Extraction Mode

The new mode, dubbed Outbreak, will see players taking on hordes of undead enemies when it goes live next week.

Battlefield 2042 is far from the most relevant game out there right now, but even though the first-person shooter has been unable to maintain a healthy player base, developer DICE has kept up with its planned post-launch support. As part of its ongoing (and final) seventh season, in fact, the game is also set to add a new time-limited mode soon that may take some fans by surprise.

The new mode, dubbed Outbreak, is going to be Dead Space themed. Effectively an extraction mode, it will see players working together and taking on hordes of undead enemies while completing various objectives, based on the gameplay footage shown in the reveal trailer. The trailer, incidentally, also shows some good old Isaac Clarke cosmetics, for fans of the sci-fi survival horror franchise. Outbreak will go live on July 9, and will remain live for a week, until July 16.

Dead Space crossing over into Battlefield makes a certain amount of sense, in that both are EA-owned franchises, while Motive Studio, the developer of 2023’s Dead Space remake, was also officially brought abord as a Battlefield co-development studio earlier this year. Then again, there’s likely also going to be a portion of the series’ fanbase that will be displeased with its reliance on Call of Duty-esque crossovers to retain interest from players.

Meanwhile, work on the next mainline Battlefield game is underway, with leaks claiming that the shooter is targeting an October 2025 release.
