Patapon and Patapon 2 are rhythm-based strategy games that were originally released for the PlayStation Portable back in the day.
Bandai Namco and Nintendo have announced that classic rhythm strategy games Patapon and its sequel Patapon 2 are coming to Nintendo Switch in the form of Patapon 1+2 Replay. The title was announced through a trailer during Nintendo’s recent Direct, which you can check out below.
Originally released on the PlayStation Portable, Patapon and its sequel puts players in the shoes of a deity for a tribe of villagers that look like eyeballs. These villagers can be commanded to take on enemy forces through the use of four drums, each of which makes a distinct sound. Combinations of these sounds, made to the rhythm of the background music, represents various commands.
As the trailer for Patapon 1+2 Replay explains it, for example, if you want your villagers to attack, the drum combination is pon-pon-pata-pon. Just simply advancing your armies forward will need the combination pata-pata-pata-pon. There are quite a few of these drum combinations that are unlocked as you progress through the single-player campaign.
Along with the rhythm-based gameplay, Patapon 1+2 Replay will also feature light RPG systems where players can gear up their villagers with new equipment, and have them participate in battles to become stronger. All of this is wrapped up in a stark art style that makes use of a few colours but presents incredible visuals thanks to contrasts.
Patapon 1+2 Replay is coming to Nintendo Switch on July 11.
