Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirm The Last of Us Part 2’s story will be told over multiple seasons.

HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has officially wrapped up its first season, with its climactic final episode, titled Look for the Light, having aired recently, and obviously, all eyes are now turning to its second season, which was officially greenlit in January. But while the first season covered the entirety of the first game and its DLC, the second season won’t be covering the entire second game.

Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann – the latter of whom also directed and wrote both games – confirmed the same in an interview with GQ. When asked if The Last of Us Part 2 will be covered in its entirety in the show’s second season, Mazin responded, “No. No way.”

Druckmann added, “It’s more than one season.”

While the assumption is that the HBO series will cover the events of the second game across two seasons, Mazin and Druckmann haven’t revealed that officially. Mazin said, “You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.”

Meanwhile, Druckmann went on to add that just like the first season, the second season won’t be a 1:1 adaptation and will be making some changes, which he’s quite excited about. “Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in Part 2] are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” he said. “And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.”

When exactly season 2 of the HBO series will air remains to be seen, but given the fact that it hasn’t yet started production, we can safely assume that it’ll be a while before we find out.
