Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Developer Diary Goes Behind the Scenes With Motion Capture

Ninja Theory outlines the upgrades made for performance capture, leading to more realistic animations in the upcoming sequel.

After a stunning new trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Ninja Theory has released a new developer diary, which delves more into the motion capture. The development team has significantly scaled up operations for the sequel, going from a board room to a full-fledged stage with more cameras. Check it out below.

The improved motion capture allows for accurately capturing the actors’ movements down to the millimeter, which means more subtle, realistic motions. There’s also a scene on a boat with several characters on board. To capture the boat’s motion for multiple characters simultaneously, Ninja Theory constructed a platform and recreated the pitch and yaw of the waves.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 launches in 2024 for Xbox Series X/S and PC. It also launches on day one for Game Pass. Head here for some impressive facial animation of Senua, showcasing the power of Unreal Engine 5 and Metahuman.
