“It’s about playing together with your friends no matter where they play. So our goal always is to reach as many players as possible.”
Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded 2 builds off its 2022 predecessor with larger spaces, new features like mounts (known as Buggies), and much more. It’s entering early access on Xbox Series X/S and PC next month, but with Microsoft leaning more into publishing its first-party titles on other platforms, what about other platforms?
After all, Grounded launched last year for PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch as one of the first four Xbox exclusives to make the jump to other platforms. While there aren’t any plans for Grounded 2 to do the same, executive producer Marcus Morgan told IGN that the team will “see where it goes in the future.”
“I will say that I’m so, so happy for Grounded that we were able to go on all those platforms. At the end of the day, we have a little tagline of ‘Ride together, survive together.’ This game, to me, is about playing together with your friends no matter where they play. And so our goal always is to reach as many players as possible. We’ll start off with this. We’ll see where it goes in the future.”
Obsidian will provide a roadmap for Grounded 2 on the same day that early access goes live. While it could repeat its predecessor’s process, Morgan says the team isn’t putting “any hard and fast constraints on that because there is a very sincere commitment to the early access process of putting content out there, seeing how people react to it, iterating on that and building from it.”
“I definitely see Grounded 2 as being…it’s set up to be much more expandable than maybe we had initially laid out Grounded 1 for, but we need to see how it goes in terms of whether or not we put a cap on or not.
“In terms of what we do for future content and beyond, that’ll really be dictated by what players do and then assuming if back-end and tech can still hold and keep us in the future, but we would stick with that too. But we’ll play that out as we work with the community through it.”
Grounded 2 will retail for $29.99 when early access begins on July 29th, though it’s also playable via Game Preview for Game Pass subscribers.
