PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Will “Probably” Get Mid-Gen Upgrades, Take-Two CEO Says

Leaks have claimed that a PS5 Pro is currently in the works at Sony, and could be targeting a late 2024 launch.

We’re over two years into the lifecycle of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and though it feels like the console generation is only just getting started, there are some who have started wondering whether there are more powerful variants of the current hardware waiting in the wings. After all, it was around this point in the previous generation that we got the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X- so could something similar be in the cards for this generation as well?

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, certainly seems to thinks so. When asked recently by GamesIndustry.biz whether he thinks we will see a PS5 Pro and similar mid-gen hardware upgrade for the current crop of console, Zelnick said, “We probably will”, before adding they one way or another mid-gen refreshes don’t “affect [Take-Two’s] business very much”.

Though Zelnick’s answer was brief, it does seem to be aligning what recent reports have claimed. Allegedly, Sony is currently at work on a PS5 Pro with a target launch window of late 2024 in mind, while developers will allegedly begin getting developer kits for the more powerful hardware in the near future as well. Reports of a similar Xbox upgrade have been few and far in between, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see both consoles coming out with new and more powerful hardware in the coming couple of years.
