All Focus Now on Next Mass Effect

The studio is shifting its full attention to the sci-fi series, with no post-launch expansions planned for the recently released Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

There has never been a Dragon Age game that hasn’t been supported with post-launch content, but it seems BioWare is breaking tradition in how it’s handling the series’ recently released fourth instalment.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s creative director Jon Epler revealed that BioWare has no plans for releasing post-launch DLC for the fantasy action RPG, and that the studio’s full focus is now going to shift to the next Mass Effect, currently in pre-production, as its next main project. Details on the latter are, however, currently scarce.

Though BioWare will presumably release any necessary patches or hotfixes for the game as and when they are needed in the weeks and months ahead, it doesn’t look like any major new content or feature additions are on the table.

The Veilguard certainly seems to have got off to a solid start. Ending a decade-long hiatus for Dragon Age, the action RPG has received positive reviews, in addition to topping sales charts on Steam and becoming EA’s biggest ever single-player game on Steam.

As for Mass Effect, the next game in the sci-fi RPG franchise was confirmed to be in the works back in 2020, though BioWare has said little else about it since then, other than showcasing the odd teaser and some concept art here and there. In June last year, the studio confirmed that the project was still in pre-production.

Project Director Michael Gamble has confirmed that the next Mass Effect will retain the mature tone and photorealistic art style of the original trilogy, while leaks have also claimed that, unlike Mass Effect: Andromeda, it will not be open world.

It’s also been confirmed that the game is being developed on Unreal Engine 5, making it the first BioWare game since Mass Effect 3 to not be developed on EA’s proprietary Frostbite engine.

Reportedly, the next Mass Effect won’t release until 2028 or 2029, however, so fans of the franchise still seem to have a long wait ahead, even if that’s the next main project for BioWare.
