Instead of one big annual expansion, Bungie opts for two medium-sized expansions and two seasons divided into four quarterly updates.

After much uncertainty, Bungie has finally revealed Destiny 2’s Codename: Frontiers. It’s a complete revamp of the studio’s live-service model for the looter shooter, starting with two medium-sized paid expansions instead of one big expansion. The first, Codename: Apollo, arrives in Summer 2025, while the second, Codename: Behemoth, arrives in Winter 2025.

Each expansion adds new stories, locations, missions, weapons, gear, raids and dungeons. A season will accompany their launch, free for all players and consisting of two major updates, with new and refreshed activities, gear, Artifact mods, events, modifiers, challenges, and balance changes.

The updates are on three-month cycles, so after Codename: Arsenal in Summer 2025, the next one, Codename: Surge, lands in Fall 2025. Meanwhile, the updates for Codename: Behemoth’s season will land in Winter 2025 and Spring 2026.

There will also be a Rewards Pass for each update with a new Exotic weapon and ornament, Legendary weapon and armor ornaments, cosmetics, resources for upgrading gear, and more. More details will be revealed in the coming months, but overall, Codename: Frontiers represents “major innovations coming to Destiny over the next few years.”

Destiny 2 is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. The current episodic format will cease when Year 11 begins, but for now, players can look forward to Episode 2: Revenant on October 8th.
