Both expansions were announced in September, but there’s no word on when either of them will release.
Square Enix announced in September it was working on two paid expansions for Final Fantasy 16, and in the absence of any details on what they will bring to the table, speculation has been in overdrive. There are, of course, some interesting doors left open for more stories to be told in Valisthea even after Final Fantasy 16’s story concludes, and in a recent interview with Japanese outlet Game Watch, director Hiroshi Takai offered some tidbits on what fans can expect.
Though Takai was reluctant to go into too much detail, he did say that the expansions will take “a closer look” at the world of Valisthea, while also delving deeper into the “darkness and mystery” surrounding Clive’s story.
“These two episodes are designed to give you a closer look at the world of Final Fantasy 16 and allow you to experience the “darkness” and “mystery” of Clive’s story,” he said.
That does seem to suggest that Clive will once again be the playable protagonist (as opposed to the likes of Jill or Cid, as many have speculated). It should also be interesting to see where exactly the two expansions will be placed chronologically with respect to the base game’s events.
Meanwhile, Takai also confirmed that the action RPG’s expansions will introduce “powerful new enemies and elements” where the combat is concerned.
“In addition, I think that we will be able to deliver new powerful enemies and elements to enjoy combat,” he said.
Recently, Square Enix also confirmed that it will be releasing an update for Final Fantasy 16 on December 8, which will make several adjustments to its Arcade Mode.
Final Fantasy 16 is available on PS5. A PC version is also in development.
