Beyond Dharma Tower: Ghostrunner 2’s Evolution in Story and Combat

In the dark corners of the gaming universe, few titles shimmer with the distinct neon glow that “Ghostrunner” casts.

It wasn’t just a game, but a ballet of blades and bullets set against the backdrop of a dystopian cyberpunk future. Now, as we stand on the threshold of its sequel, we find ourselves asking: How did we get here? And where are we heading next? Let’s embark on a journey that revisits Dharma Tower and delves deep into the heart of Ghostrunner 2.

The Story of Ghostrunner so Far

Our story began in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world, a bleak future where the remnants of humanity clung to life inside the towering monolith known as Dharma Tower. This wasn’t just a building; it was the last city and refuge of mankind, a sanctuary and a prison rolled into one. Inside its walls, society was fragmented, rife with violence, poverty, and chaos. At the pinnacle of this vertical city was Mara the Keymaster, a tyrant ruling with an iron fist, ensuring that dissent remained a whispered dream.

Enter Jack, a cybernetic warrior with unmatched agility who was the 74th Ghostrunner. When the Keymaster led a coup to take over Dharma Tower and kill its founder – the Architect, Jack was tragically destroyed in the fight for control. He was later rebuilt by the rebellion, known as The Climbers, with a mission to ascend Dharma Tower to challenge the oppressive regime and tear down the Keymaster’s reign.

Equipped with a katana, incredible abilities, and an undying spirit, Jack traversed the labyrinthine corridors of Dharma Tower, battling the Keymaster’s minions and uncovering dark secrets that spoke of humanity’s downfall and its desperate struggle for survival. Each floor unveiled a new layer of treachery, challenging both Jack’s combat prowess and the players’ dexterity.

But Ghostrunner was more than a series of intense combat scenarios. It was a narrative of loss, redemption, and the undying human spirit. As we witnessed Jack’s evolution from a mere tool of destruction to a beacon of hope, we realized that the game was setting the stage for an even grander narrative. By the end of Ghostrunner, Dharma Tower was free, but freedom came with its own set of challenges.

You can watch a recap of Ghostrunner here.

The Dawn of a New Combat Era

Where the original Ghostrunner introduced players to swift, agile combat, its successor promises to elevate this experience, making it richer and more strategic. But how exactly?

Dynamic Enemy Behavior

In Ghostrunner 2, your foes aren’t just obstacles; they’re dynamic challenges. The enemy AI has undergone significant refinement. Enemies now respond distinctively based on the skills and strategies you deploy, ensuring each encounter feels fresh and requires tactical thinking. Take advantage of the new blocking mechanic to increase your chances of survival and lower your death count.

Enhanced Player Progression

Say goodbye to the Tetris grid. The sequel boasts a revamped progression system, granting players the autonomy to experiment and tailor their gameplay style. This means more skills, more upgrades, and more ways to feel like the ultimate cyber-ninja.

Interactive Environments

The world isn’t just a backdrop; it’s an arsenal. From exploding barrels to destructible walls, Ghostrunner 2 introduces interactive elements that can be used strategically in combat, adding another layer to confrontations.

Motorcycle Combat

A groundbreaking addition, vehicular combat allows players to engage foes at high speeds, introducing an entirely new dimension to the game’s core combat philosophy. This isn’t just a novelty; it’s a game-changer. After you leave Dharma Tower you will experience a more open world where you will be able to traverse on the motorcycle beyond the linear gameplay you saw in Ghostrunner.

Enemies Old and New

The streets outside Dharma Tower are rife with threats. While some adversaries from the original game return, more menacing and craftier than before, Ghostrunner 2 introduces a myriad of new foes. Each enemy type presents unique challenges, pushing players to adapt and evolve their combat strategies continually. You will confront the original Ghostrunners, but beware because they are loaded up with deadly arsenal capable of eradicating what remains of humanity. Boss battles in Ghostrunner 2 are monumental, challenging players to utilize every skill in their arsenal. The first boss you will face is Ahriman, an indoctrinated Ghostrunner blindly following his leader’s cause. He heralds the upcoming destruction and chaos while lacking true agency. In this first fight you will need to reunite with Bakunin, one of the bosses from Ghostrunner: Project_Hel, if you hope to survive!
