Director Naoki Hamaguchi says players will experience a “myriad of different stories along the way” in the upcoming PS5 title.
Final Fantasy 16 is out later this month for PS5 with a demo coming soon. However, Square Enix hasn’t forgotten its next big game – Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. In a new official tweet, director Naoki Hamaguchi answered how players would journey the world outside Midgar in the sequel.
Instead of rattling off different transportation methods, he replied, “Players will be able to journey across the wide and multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom, experiencing a myriad of different stories along the way.” It seems to indicate less linearity, though how much players will see of the world remains to be seen. There has to be something left for the third part, after all.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is currently in development for PS5. It’s planned to release in Winter 2023, though Square Enix hasn’t provided a more concrete release date yet. Development is going “according to plan,” per producer Yoshinori Kitase, and Square Enix is “working on nailing down a release date.”
Stay tuned for more updates, though an announcement could be coming at the Summer Game Fest Showcase on June 8th.
