Those under 16 can’t use GameChat and must have it enabled by a parent (who then provides their number for verification).
GameChat is one of the more controversial features of the Nintendo Switch 2, mostly because it’s tied to the C button and a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online (past the first year). However, you can’t fault Nintendo for ensuring security, as its official website confirms you need a mobile phone number to use it.
This number is linked to one’s Nintendo Account and requires verification via text. However, GameChat is blocked for those under 16 years of age. A parent must enable it through Parental Controls and provide a phone number to verify.
Linking your phone number seems optional for those who don’t use GameChat, though more details are required. GameChat supports up to four people in a video call, which requires Nintendo’s dedicated camera to see each other. Of course, you can also host an audio call which supports up to 24 people.
The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5th.
