LEGO has traditionally worked with third-party developers to make games based on the LEGO theme, like the recent LEGO Horizon Adventures.
LEGO is seemingly making bigger investments in its video game business. In an interview with the Financial Times (via VGC), LEGO executive Niels Christiansen revealed that the company is starting development of video games in-house. The company has previously teamed up with studios to release a host of different LEGO-branded games, but with this move, it is currently unknown if these collaborations will continue in the future.
“We can say, as long as we’re under the Lego brand, we can cover experiences for kids of all ages, digital or physical. [Games development in-house] is something we’re building up,” said Christiansen.
LEGO has previously worked with a variety of game development studios, including Traveller’s Tales, Guerrilla Games, and even Epic Games. The most recent release under the LEGO banner was LEGO Horizon Adventures, which was released back in November 2024.
The company also has a long-term partnership with Epic Games through LEGO Fortnite, which brought a host of LEGO-themed content to the battle royale game. Among other things, it features building tools based on LEGO, as well as a more whimsical and family-friendly take on Fortnite‘s combat.
Rather than focusing on competitive multiplayer, however, LEGO Fortnite is instead a PvE game that involves up to seven players scavenging areas around them for building materials that can then be used to create bases and craft equipment.
It has also worked with 2K for racing game LEGO 2K Drive. A football game, dubbed LEGO 2K Goooal! is also seemingly under development.
LEGO Horizon Adventures recently celebrated its critical reception with the release of an accolades trailer. Alongside showcasing the game’s positive review, the trailer also gave players a look at some more gameplay.
LEGO Horizon Adventures is essentially a LEGO-themed retelling of the story of Horizon Zero Dawn. The game features a more cheerful and whimsical take on the open-world title, putting players in the shoes of Aloy and her friends. The game also features the iconic robotic beasts from the Horizon franchise, albeit completely LEGO-fied.
