One of the biggest surprises at The Game Awards this year was the announcement of Marvel’s Blade, a project being developed by Arkane Lyon. Despite being an Xbox-owned studio (under Bethesda), one rather odd thing was that the game featured mention of Xbox itself. This has led many online to speculate that Marvel’s Blade isn’t an Xbox exclusive and will be coming to other platforms, such as PlayStation.
It seems that Xbox doesn’t even know either, or at least is making the gaming community believe that, as they’ve declined even to clarify the confusion.
If you’ve watched the trailer again, you’ll see no mentions of any platforms despite Arkane being an Xbox-owned studio. It’s rather odd, with many speculating the reasoning being that it’s either not an exclusive or because it wasn’t an Xbox-specific event; they chose not to have any Xbox wrappers. However, that hasn’t stopped PlayStation from using its logo in both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Wolverine games, so I don’t think that’s the reason behind the lack of Xbox logos.
VG247 recently contacted Xbox via email to get some answers but was met with a “decline to comment” reply. Our thoughts? We think Marvel’s Blade will be an exclusive on Xbox for consoles, with a planned PC release following past Xbox releases. The lack of platforms could be due to negotiations and such still going on behind closed doors. It’s still odd, but we’ll likely have a more concrete answer at the next major Xbox showcase. We’d be surprised if the game ends up being multiplatform, though Bethesda did say their game releases would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Could this be a scenario where Bethesda’s deal with Marvel happened before the company got acquired by Microsoft, and part of it was releasing the game on multiple platforms? We can’t say for sure, but who knows at this point, right?
Whether Blade is an Xbox exclusive or not, I’m just hoping the studio can pull it off and do the character justice.
Marvel’s Blade is currently targeting a 2025 release, and once we know more about the game, we’ll let our readers know.
